Earle was consistently critical of claims regarding the nearly 100% cure rates of insanity reported by senior officials of other asylums, which he detailed in his book The Curability of Insanity. Earle began to cultivate a strong work therapy program by expanding the farm, and constructing a greenhouse as well as other service oriented buildings. After only two months of operating the Board of Trustees speculated that the limit could be raised to three hundred patients. ![]() Within six weeks the population would reach 220, most of whom were transfers from other institutions long overwhelmed on the eastern side of the state. Staff received the first patients on August 16, 1858. ![]() The original design specified a maximum of two hundred patients, but this limit was raised to two hundred and fifty by the statewide hospital commissioners even before the doors opened. Despite its failings, the State Hospital continuously expanded for more than a century because there was no other place for society to treat and warehouse the poor and mentally ill, housing more than 2,500 patients at a time before federal funding for decentralized initiatives and the Northampton Consent Decree ultimately closed its doors. Students who asked to leave were allowed to do so once their parent showed up at the school. We work very closely with the police departments when any issue arises. They were on site much of the morning to reassure parents and students. We reacted by notifying the Glenville and Scotia police departments. ![]() We will continue to investigation the situation as any additional information becomes known. The investigation conducted by the administration and the police has not linked the post to any Scotia- Glenville student or our schools. Social media posts were passed around today among our students that threatened violence during the scheduled walk outs at the high school and middle school. I wanted to talk to you today about the incident this morning that has caused some students and parents to be upset and scared about coming to school. This is a message from Superintendent Susan Swartz:
